78 Derngate, Northampton

78 Derngate is a small terraced house in Northampton that Charles Rennie Mackintosh remodelled in 1916 to 1917 for the model engineer W. J. Bassett-Lowke. It was Mackintosh’s last major commission, and it is the only place outside Scotland where his mature architecture and interior style can be seen in the setting he created.

The house

The house was restored to its original 1916 scheme. Architect John McAslan described the interior as an “extraordinary riot of colour and pattern”.
