Guildford Cathedral stands on Stag Hill above the town and was built between 1936 and 1961 to designs by Edward Maufe. Its best-known glass is not coloured: it is the engraved work of John Hutton, who also produced the West Screen at Coventry Cathedral.

Hutton’s sentinel angels

At the west doors, engraved glass panels show a row of sentinel angels, dated 1961. More angels by Hutton appear over the south transept doors. Hutton engraved figures by hand on large sheets of clear glass, so that the designs appear as pale, luminous lines against the view beyond. In January 2024 one panel was smashed by vandals, and a public appeal followed to pay for its repair.

The cathedral is a useful companion to Coventry Cathedral, where Hutton’s screen of 66 saints and angels can be seen on a far larger scale.
