Isn't stained glass a dying art?

If you've always imagined that making stained glass lampshades or genuine leaded stained glass windows were two of the crafts that had disappeared along with gas-lit street lamps and bath chairs - you're in for a big surprise!

You can learn the techniques on our courses

We have been designing and making stained glass windows, terrariums, lampshades and other items professionally for many years and originally had no intention of running courses for beginners. However, avid enthusiasts persuaded us to pass on the basic skills and we have taught well over 3000 students this absorbing and rewarding craft.

Both Sam and Elizabeth are experienced in all aspects of working with stained glass and can offer a different approach where necessary - for instance Sam is left-handed whereas Elizabeth is right-handed ! In a craft situation these small differences count for a lot.

Interested in starting to learn the techniques yourself?

We offer four-day Introductory courses at our studio where you can learn the basic techniques while designing and making your own panels and other items. If you want to improve existing skills in the craft we can also arrange advanced courses to enable you to progress in whichever aspect of stained glass you enjoy

What kind of people take up this craft?

Stained Glass Craft and Traditional Leaded Window Making are crafts that seem to appeal to people in all walks of life, including doctors, dentists, solicitors, hoteliers, hairdressers, secretaries, teachers, housewives, builders, office workers, plumbers, dustmen, shopkeepers and pensioners. They have found that whether the reason for joining a course is to make terrariums and lampshades for the home, or repair that old but much-loved front door stained glass panel, or even just for the satisfaction of having learned the techniques - the common factor that brings success in this craft is enthusiasm.

What kind of things could I learn to make?

Visit our Students' Gallery and see what some of our students have designed and made.

Two of our students were awarded prestigious trophies at the County Craft Exhibition - one winning the Glass Trophy and another becoming the Champion of Champions!

Could I make money from stained glass?

Working with stained glass as a hobby is absorbing and rewarding - but not all our students have been satisfied with this. Over the last few years we have seen over a dozen of our ex-students setting up their own businesses offering custom made stained glass panels or lampshades to the general public, and helping the aim of Bournemouth Stained Glass to bring the beauty of genuine stained glass to ever more homes.
