Modern and Post-War Stained Glass Trail

Where to see twentieth century windows, from Chagall to Piper and Reyntiens.

  • Salisbury Cathedral (Salisbury). The Prisoners of Conscience window by Gabriel Loire of Chartres (1980) is a modern blue window in the Trinity Chapel.
  • Chichester Cathedral (Chichester). Marc Chagall’s window, commissioned by Dean Walter Hussey and unveiled in October 1978, shows Psalm 150 and the arts given in praise.
  • All Saints Church, Tudeley (Tudeley, near Tonbridge). The only church in the world with all its windows designed by Chagall.
  • Coventry Cathedral (Coventry). The Baptistery window by Piper and Reyntiens (1961) is a wall of colour seen from within the new cathedral beside the ruins of the old.
  • Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (Liverpool). The Lantern Tower glass, made in 1965 to 1967, floods the central space with colour and is the best-known post-war window in the north of England.
  • University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel (Glasgow). A chapel that shows several of Scotland’s leading twentieth century glass artists in one building.
